Awkward Social Situations

awkward - Awkward
What do you do when you are walking in the hallway and you see someone you know, but you don't know?

Do you smile at them as you pass?

No, because if they don't do it back you look like a dork.

Do you look somewhere else and pick up the pace?

No, because you are then obviously avoiding them.

Do you wave and speak?

No, no, that's just doing too much.

I think America needs to come up with some more rules regarding these kinds of situations, because I promise you they happen to me all the time...

For instance, a guy my sister used to work with bumped into me at school recently. Now I know who he is, because my sister talks about him and I have seen him at her job on more than one occasion. And I know he knows I know him. And I am pretty sure he knows me. He even tried to sell me a checking account at PNC Bank one time.

But when he walked into the computer lab a few moments ago, he looked directly at me with the blatant recognition on his face, said nothing, and sat down at the computer directly across from me. Now I'm debating furiously in my mind-

"MAN. Why did he have to sit across from me?"

"Every time I look up, I keep accidentally making eye contact. Ugh, I hope doesn't think I'm digging on him."

"I wonder if I should I get up and leave...wait, NO. I got here first, he needs to move."

"Shoot, he just sneezed. Should I say 'Bless you'??!"

And on and on... Come on America, aren't there rules for situations like this written down somewhere?
